I had three boards of White Pine in my stash and it is time to start a new project. This time I cut all the parts out of paper so I could play around with different layouts; I was trying to avoid knots and checks, use straight grain for the narrow pieces, center nice patterns on the prominent parts, hide the sap wood, and get as much mileage out of the wood I have. The project? A smaller size spin on the 18th-century carpenter tool chests discussed by Jim Tolpin in The Toolbox Book; it will hold my small collection of antique wood planes. #ToolChest #WhitePine #Pine #HandToolsOnly #Woodworking

Just finished chopping the tails on the ends of the 18th-century carpenter tool box. This time I was able to chop the waste without crushing the fibres or receding my base line; I realized it takes not only sharp chisels: it takes patience; patience to tap the chisel gently, without trying to take out too much at a time. #ToolChest #WhitePine #Pine #HandToolsOnly #Woodworking

I decided to use some leftover Canary Wood to outfit the carpenter’s tool chest with a small tray. The stock was a good 7/8” thick and rather than waste a lot of it away with a scrub plane, I took the time to resaw it into a 1/2”-thick tray side and a 1/4”-thick extra; I was puffing and sweating while pushing my big frame saw, but now I am happy I have an extra piece I can use for a small project. #ToolChest #CanaryWood #HandToolsOnly #Woodworking

The easiest/fastest one was the groove at the bottom of the side piece of Canary Wood; unfortunately, the fence of my plow plane could not reach far enough for the other grooves, so I had to chop them out and rout them. I was hoping to have time to fit the bottom of the tray, but by 4:30PM it was already too dark to keep working: Winter is already here :-( Maybe it is time to install better lighting! #ToolChest #CanaryWood #WhitePine #Pine #HandToolsOnly #Woodworking
