The panels for the lid of the carpenter’s tool chest are in the clamps. The glue-up gave me a hard time; as soon as I started tightening the clamps, the panels started sliding all over the place and in the end I was not able to line up the references faces as well as during the dry-run; I will have more planing to do, but hope the glue line will be nice and tight anyway. #ToolChest #HandToolsOnly #WhitePine #Pine #Woodworking
To attach the lid of the 18th-century carpenter’s tool chest, I decided to go with strap hinges. I wanted the short leaf to wrap around the back of the chest, so I put the hinge in a bench vise, heated the leaf with a torch, and hammered the bend. The hinge had pre-drilled holes that got too close to the edge of the back of the chest, so I added some Canary Wood reinforcements which I shaped after the inspiration of the moment. Perhaps it is not standard procedure, but I chiseled out the notches in the back and attached the hinges to the carcass first and to the lid afterwards. Also, I have not dimensioned the lid yet; I have only planed the two faces and a reference edge; I thought I would have more margin for error if I marked the exact dimension of the lid while it was attached to the carcass. #ToolChest #HandToolsOnly #WhitePine #Pine #CanaryWood #Woodworking
