I started yet another box; I am using my last leftover piece of Douglas Fir for the lid and decided to pair it with Sugar Maple which I re-sawed to have continuous grain all around the box. The card-holder box sides are planed S4S, grooved for the top and bottom, and ready to be sawn to length; but before doing that and starting to work on the miter joints, I thought I would give the interior faces a few coats of shellac; I reasoned it would be faster and easier to do it now and would not risk get shellac on the glue surfaces; however, I have not tried this before and am not sure how well the finish will survive all the manipulation those pieces still have to go through. #WoodenBox #Box #HandToolsOnly #SugarMaple #Maple #MadeByHand #Woodworking

Finishing off the shallow mortises in the box sides using a mini router plane. The lid will have “pulls” on the sides that will fit in those mortises and keep the lid in place and aligned with the body of the box. I came up with this contraption so I could support the sides of the box lid while chopping the shallow mortises. I was able to do the mortises in the box without support, but when I started working on the lid, the chisel was simply bouncing off the wood and sliding sideways all over the place (i.e. past my knife line!).
