The runner of the front vise of #TheEnglishWorkbench is kept horizontal by a thick shim (flip the picture upside down in your head and attach it under the top of the bench) and sandwiched between two guides that are screwed into the shim using large-head bolts and insert nuts. The holes for the bolts are elongated so the guides can be adjusted about 1/8” left or right to keep the vise running smoothly. #woodworking #handtoolsonly
I finally went back to working on #TheEnglishWorkbench. I planed the bottom of the three top boards to remove some twist and excessive cupping and planed the inner edges straight and square. Then I entered the middle board using some dowels, so I can register the other boards against it (leaving the width of a tongue depressor between them). I am now glueing one board at a time, starting with the back board. #woodworking #workbench
I had some trouble with the back top board sliding around while I was trying to glue it (of course these things never happen during the dry run), so I decided I was going to use three dowels along the front apron to make sure the front top board stays where it is meant to be. Using dowel centers makes the job quick and easy. #woodworking #workbench #handtoolsonly
