I made a friction board with a 1” plywood base, a Black Cherry ledger, and a couple of pieces of 120-grit sandpaper. I was pretty surprised at how grippy it was; I was able to smooth plane a 1” x 6” piece of Cherry that was barely 1/8” thick and the thing was rock solid, not even a hint of slippage. I have a feeling this is going to be a very useful board. #FrictionBoard #WorkbenchAppliance #HandToolsOnly #Woodworking
I have not given up on improving my modest hand sawing skills, but for challenging cuts, I have decided try out a miter saw. I made a 3/4” plywood base with an Oak ledger so I can clamp the saw to my bench. The bed of the saw is a step lower in the middle area; the piece to be cut is not supported under the blade so the edges end up a bit rugged; I made myself a bunch of sacrificial wooden triangles that bring the center of the bed level with the rest; I put some adhesive sand paper underneath so the wooden triangle stays in place. The resulting cuts are really nice: precise and clean. #MiterSaw #WorkbenchAppliance #HandToolsOnly #Woodworking
